5 ways to help kids enjoy movement
from an early age

A child’s first 5 years are a key time for them to learn fundamental movement skills like jumping and running. Kids who aren’t grounded in these basic skills will grow up with less physical literacy meaning they won’t enjoy moving and so won’t be inclined to activity.

And there are other benefits they’ll miss out on too. Moving with confidence won’t just make kids enjoy being active, they’ll also be more likely do better in school, be healthier, and have a higher sense of self-esteem and well-being.

You can help your kids become more physically literate by:

1. Nurture your baby’s motor skill development
You can help your baby lay the foundation for developing physical literacy by focusing on motor skill development.

 2. Push back against PE cuts
Even though we’re seeing more and more research showing how important school PE programs are to physical literacy, PE and recreation budget cuts are everywhere these days. Calling or writing letters to your local representative could help to keep or even add new PE programs.

3. Don’t be in a rush
Try to work with your kids at their own pace. Focus on successes and positive reinforcement. Compliments will go a long way to building on the confidence and healthy ego that physical activity can bring.

4. Make it fun
Sports are so often about winning and losing. Sure, competition can make activities exciting but sometimes that pressure takes away the fun. If kids are enjoying being active then they’ll keep being active.

5. Be an active role model
Whether you see it as a plus or a minus, our kids watch us and model their behaviour on ours. Kids with active parents are far more likely to be active themselves.
What is one sport or activity you've always wanted to try? What do you think about you and your kids trying it together?
Early childhood is a critical period for the development of healthy, active living behaviours. 60 minutes per day is the goal to strive for!  Remember to make it fun!

"Flip for Your Spine"...

Professional real estate flippers can recognize the beauty and value in any dilapidated house. Take a home on the brink of falling apart, install some new hardwood floors, fix the foundation, upgrade the kitchen and bathroom fixtures and voila, you recouped your investment and much more.

Flipping spines is similar…many patients begin their care with dilapidated spines. Kyphotic cervical curves, degenerating discs and postural distortions – all compounded by inefficient electrical (nerve) system function. These are the signs of neglect that often present during an initial chiropractic inspection. Unfortunately, most spine owners don’t know the maintenance required to keep their spines in a healthy, liveable state. It isn't until a crisis ensues that they learn how far they let their property go.

Moving out of a bad spine is not an option, but flipping it back to shape is. If you have chronic spinal issues due to neglect or lack of knowledge, a master Chiropractor can help you get it back to ‘live in’ condition. With the right plan and enough time, you’ll recoup your investment and more in health benefits.

“Did You Hear…”

Here’s how it all started as told by our founder Dr. D. D. Palmer in September of 1895…

“Harvey Lillard, a janitor, in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf.

An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before.

There was nothing ‘accidental’ about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing ‘crude’ about this adjustment, it was specific, so much so that no Chiropractor has equaled it.”

And that’s how Chiropractic was born – good thing D. D. was a great persuader!

The object of the carnival game Whack-a-Mole is to use a mallet to hit as many critters as possible when they pop up in random succession. Trouble is, as you hit one mole, three more pop up and disappear before you can nail them all. Whack-a-Mole is a perfect metaphor for how people are medicated today. Unfortunately in this game you end up on a ton of drugs, for a bunch of problems, with no actual improvement in your health.

According to a NCHS Data brief by the CDC, over the last 10 years the percentage of Americans who took at least one prescriptions drug in the past month increased from 44% to 48%. The use of two or more drugs increased from 25% to 31%. The use of five or more drugs increased from 6% to 11% Yet despite taking all these drugs, the US embarrassingly ranks  37th among the world's industrial countries when it comes to overall health.

For Chiropractors, health is not defined by how many symptoms you can temporarily 'whack away' with drugs, but how well your body can adapt to its environment and heal under its own innate abilities. You have more healing intelligence in your little finger than all the doctors and pharmacies in the world put together. Big Pharma doesn't believe so, but Chiropractors do. Keep your Nerve System clear and you won't have to play their failing game.

"Subluxations Don’t Take Vacations”

Toes in the sand, not a cloud in the sky, 75 degree water temps. Vacations are the perfect time to decompress, spend precious time with family and friends and reconnect with your soul. What could possibly stress your body?

How about ten days of sleep on a mushy mattress? Or two hours of novice water skiing/body dragging lessons. Not to mention the bottomless Mojitos and obligatory trips to the dessert buffet…and don’t forget nursing that nasty sunburn from day three.

Unfortunately, stress doesn’t take time off. The scenery may change, but your nerve system is still hard at work – reacting and adapting to those “relaxing” shifts in routine. It’s a prime opportunity to become Subluxated.

If you’ve been away from the office for a while, we hope you’re well rested. But now it’s time to get back on track and into a healthy regimen; especially getting your spine checked and cleared of Subluxations. When you need to recover from vacation – put Chiropractic on top of your itinerary.

“Healing Zone Ahead”

Construction sites are hectic – heavy equipment everywhere, orange cones marking hazardous areas, workers tearing up and laying down new asphalt. It’s a wonder anything gets done amid the chaos. But behind that chaos is intelligence…a team of well skilled architects, surveyors and foreman are carefully directing the project behind the scenes until it reaches completion.

Like construction projects, healing can appear chaotic and delayed at times. Just when it seems you’re making progress, something flairs up…an old problem returns, a new ache arises and it feels like you’re slipping backwards. But behind the chaos, a sophisticated innate intelligence is orchestrating the healing process at a level beyond human comprehension.

Healing can look ugly from the outside. But be patient – amid the chaos, organization prevails and progress is happening. Know that the best construction crew (innate incorporated) with the best set of blue prints (your Chiropractic Care Plan) is working tirelessly to get the job done.
